Many of our donors end up donating to the event as a whole instead of to a participant because they think that they will be able to choose the participant during some part of the donation form process.
I usually have to change the soft credit on 100 different donations each season because of this.
Most new donors think the process should be: click donate, choose the participant, fill out the info and credit card number, then process. What is happening now is they click donate, fill out the info and credit card number, then look to see if there is anywhere that they can choose the participant, then they either give up or just process the donation thinking they've done it "right". Then I get an email from the participant saying that their friend donated, but they don't see it on their page, so I have to investigate and then change the soft credit.

Is there an update on this? It says "Planned" but this post is 3 years old.
We have the same problem, but don't want to take away the ability for people to donate to the event itself, in case they don't know a participant but want to support the cause.
We were able to work with Charity Dynamics to get around this and are working on this with our redesign w/ BB right now. When we launch our 2017 sites, I'll send you a link to our form to see if it is what you're thinking about. If so, this functionality might already exist...would just need a little creative coding ;)
This is a great idea. We'll be sure to implement it as we build out Luminate Next Generation.
Matt,
On our donation page, we have a link that says. "Search for a participant", but the donor has to leave the donation form to do that search. I want them to be able to search without leaving the donation form page.
Hey Sally. On our site, we have the Donate button on the greeting back link to the Search page. Then from there they can find their participant and give directly to them. And if needed, you can have a separate link if you wanted to allow people to make a donation directly to the event.
For clarification: the donors I am speaking of are clicking "Donate" on the greeting page of the event (not on the participant's page).
